Benefits of Play
Benefits of Play at William’s Den
Growing Happy, Courageous & Resilient Children
William’s Den was created with a clear purpose: to support the development of happy, courageous and resilient children through the power of real play. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we believe that children are capable, curious and full of potential—and that their environment should encourage exploration, independence and joy.
At William’s Den, play isn’t just for fun (though there’s plenty of that)—it’s a vital tool for learning. Our indoor and outdoor spaces are carefully designed to invite discovery, encourage risk-taking in a safe way, and nurture a child’s natural desire to investigate the world around them. We see children as protagonists in their own growth journey—something the Reggio Emilia approach champions.
Why Play Matters
As the American Academy of Pediatrics puts it, “Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children.” Every jump, climb, tumble and laugh at William’s Den is helping your child build skills that go far beyond the playground.
From managing emotions and overcoming challenges to building friendships and learning persistence, play is the foundation for the kind of learning that sticks.
We Believe in Good Risk
We don’t wrap children in cotton wool—and we don’t believe they should be. At William’s Den, we offer a space where children can take age-appropriate risks in a secure, supervised environment.
As Peter Gray notes, “Children learn the most important lessons in life through play.” Allowing children to climb a little higher, balance a little further, or try again after they fall is how they develop bravery, resilience and self-belief.

Inspired by Experts, Backed by Experience
At William’s Den, we take inspiration from pioneering educational thinkers like Loris Malaguzzi (Reggio Emilia), Jean Piaget and Maria Montessori—each of whom believed that children thrive when they’re free to explore their world through play.
We’ve built a space where these principles come to life—where play is child-led, imagination is encouraged, and learning is everywhere (even if it’s disguised as fun).
Let Them Be Little
We believe in the value of slowing down and letting children lead the way. In doing so, they grow into confident, capable young people. At William’s Den, we’re proud to offer more than just a fun day out—we’re offering a childhood well played.
