7 things to do in East Yorkshire this Easter holidays

This year is flying by and it seems hard to believe we're already in the Easter holidays! If you're looking for egg-stra special things to do with the family in the Easter holidays, here are 7 of our favourite things to get up to in East Yorkshire at this time of year at William's Den and beyond!

    1. Check out an Easter show

Did you know that the tradition of watching plays at Easter time has been around in the UK for centuries? For many years, so-called Passion Plays - sometimes part of a season of Mystery Plays - were one of the most popular ways that people shared stories from the Christian Bible back when not many people could read, write, or had access to written texts. The Reformation during King Henry VIII’s reign largely put a stop to the practice, but there are still some towns and cities dotted around where an annual Passion Play is performed. You’re unlikely to find one in East Yorkshire in 2024, but you could always check out a different kind of Easter play as a way of sharing stories with your family!

At William’s Den you can meet Denis the Duck and his friends Percy Potts and Cora Cabbage and find out about their gardening adventures, then help them solve a mystery, too!

    2. Hunt for Easter eggs!

Is it even Easter if you’re not knee deep in the garden seeking out treats left by the Easter Bunny?! Some Easter trails need the brightest bunnies on the case to solve clues to reach the treasure, some egg hunts lead you to hidden caches of goodies in the undergrowth, and others are a mix of both! Our Easter Garden is back at William’s Den this year and we have a very special trail waiting for you to explore. The best bit of all? The Easter Bunny has left a chocolate treat for every single child - as long as they can help Percy and Cora in the garden first! (PS the Easter Bunny also has goodies for children with allergies, so there’s no need for them to miss out!)

    3. Be a nature nerd - in a good way!

Easter is the perfect time to look around and see springtime in all its green and verdant glory. Look up to see which trees have blossomed, their different colours and scents, and decide which is your favourite. At William’s Den you can look out for oaks, beech, sycamore, maple, larch and others even without heading into the woods. You might also spot spring flowers such as daffodils and crocii brightening up the fields and hedgerows along with daisies and buttercups and more!

    4. Listen out for baby chicks!

When it comes to the pitter-patter of tiny feet - or wings! Spring time is one of the busiest times of the year for bird families. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot clues of a birds nest nearby, such as feathers or moss clumped at the foot of a tree or hedge. You might hear the high pitched screeches of tiny hungry birds and see new parent birds flying in with worms or bugs or morsels in their beaks.

    5. Try a new treat

It wouldn’t be Easter if you didn’t get to sample something tasty and sweet, whether that’s chocolate or something entirely different, like Yorkshire’s first ever Hot Cross Bun Waffle. Think of a waffle that tastes like a hot cross bun, with cream, ice cream and caramel sauce on top. It’s incredible, and it’s ONLY at William’s Den this Easter!

    6. Get outside and play!

Our natural hard-wood indoor adventure park is one of the most special and unique things about William’s Den - and it’s open all year round whenever the Den is! When it comes to spring though, our outdoor play space really comes into its own with our mud kitchens, zip wires, den building zones and acres of space to run around in and explore in the fresh air. Bring your wellies and get splashing!

    7. Have a family get-together

Finding the perfect location for a family gathering that’s not too far from everyone, will keep everyone happy all day long, and has delicious, home-made food that’s worth travelling for is a bit of a curate’s egg. Unless you know somewhere like William’s Den, which has all of that and more. Located just off J38 of the M62 near North Cave, East Yorkshire, we regularly host family gatherings that bring together friends and family members from all over for a day of catching up and fun. If there’s more than eight of you, can book a table in our restaurant in advance, and if there’s more than 20 then you automatically get a group discount, too!
